N. N. Muraviev Family as a Model of Education of Nobility in Early 19th Century: From Ostashevo to the School of Military Guides

This paper focuses on the history of creation and description of educational model developed by Major General N.N. Muraviev (1768-1840), an outstanding teacher who laid the foundations of military engineering education in Russia. The key message is transformation of home education system into a system of a military education institution for the youth, the School of Military Guides established by Muraviev in 1811 to train officers for the General Staff. The School grew based on experience N.N. Muraviev gained educating and training his own sons for the military service at his estate Ostashevo turned into an educational center. The organizational backbone of Muraviev’s system was strict patriarchal structure closely linked to traditions of Christian education. At the same time progressive innovations of European cultural experience organically overlapped with the patriarchal basis. Another important postulate was building up a hierarchy of valor and honor, observing traditions of military glory of both the Motherland and noble ancestry, shaping corporate noblemen identity combined with indispensable point dhonneur understood as courage, bravery, honesty, unselfishness, indifference to luxury, true grit, the ability to defend one’s beliefs. In N.N. Muraviev’s educational system principles of comradeship and collectivism, diligence, passion for sciences and knowledge, commitment to self-perfection were among the priorities. Continuous reference to ideals of nobleman and knight culture and a practical attempt to nurture a new generation of ‘Russian knights’ were its essential features. In terms of education N.N. Muraviev took into the account all progressive trends of the time and studying field-specific military engineering sciences was accompanied by a deep learning of history, Russian and foreign languages, geography, geodetic surveying, astronomy, physics and chemistry. At the same time a creative approach to studies was cultivated, education did not only serve as a solid foundation for professional growth but also as a basis for philosophic and political interests and broad scientific outlook.
