Albrecht Burkardt: „At the Origins of the Grand Tour. Travel in the Treatises of Education of the Nobility from the 16th to the Early 17th Century“

The Grad Tour is a well-known and key element of aristocratic education. However, its origins are still unclear. Albrecht Burkardt examines two different sources: The treatises concerning aristocratic education and those about the „reason of state“.

Andrea Bruschi: „Studying Vernaculars, Studying in Vernaculars: Modern Languages in the Education of the Élites (France, 17th and 18th Centuries)“

Andrea Bruschi reviews the spread of modern vernaculars of French in the education of the French nobility. Although an increasing number of texts were translated from ancient languages, mostly Latin, into modern languages which made it easier to study these disciplines, members of the elite were still expected to have mastered more than one vernacular so they were able to travel.

Annie Bruter: „Robe and Sword Nobles in 17th Century France: Two Conflicting Educational Ideals?“

The French nobility of the 17th century can be divided into Sword Nobles and Robe Nobles. Whereas the former were (supposedly) heirs of the heirs of the Cevalerie the latter had bought their titles from the king. In her presentation Annie Bruter points out the similarities and differences in the education of both types of nobilities.

Anna V. Stogova: „Friendship as a Behavioral Imperative in England and France in the Second Half of the 17th – Early 18th Century“

In her talk Anna Vyacheslavovna Stogova traces the evolution of the idea of friendship. During the second half of the 17th and the early 18th century the idea of friendship transforms from an emotional affection to a virtue of the truly educated.

Maciej Serwański: „French Aspects in the Educational Pattern of the Polish Nobility in the 17th Century“

Maciej Serwański explores the influence of French culture on Polish Nobility. By studying in France young Poles of the wealthy families familiarized themselves with French culture and ideology. When returning home to Poland they brought their ideas with them. The talk demonstrate that these French aspects were present in the patterns of the education of the Polish nobility.
