Olga Kosheleva: “Teaching the Art of Speaking Properly Among Young Russian Noblemen”

In her talk Olga Kosheleva examines the strategies of politeness in Russian speech. Whereas in Russia it was considered polite to be straightforward and telling the truth to one’s face, foreigners considered this to be rude. She examines guidebooks that were supposed to help adolescents manage these crosscultural differences.
