Galina Smagina examines the ideals of women’s education promoted by Jacob Staehlin in his work “Plan of Education for a Young Aristocratic Lady” (1778). Besides humanities Staehlin also stressed the importance of sciences and sets clear educational goals for both.

Albrecht Burkardt: “At the Origins of the Grand Tour. Travel in the Treatises of Education of the Nobility from the 16th to the Early 17th Century”

The Grad Tour is a well-known and key element of aristocratic education. However, its origins are still unclear. Albrecht Burkardt examines two different sources: The treatises concerning aristocratic education and those about the “reason of state”.

Jean Boutier: “A European Model of Education of Nobility: Noble Academies in Europe, 1550 – End of the 18th Century”

In his plenary lecture Jean Boutier, Directeur d’Etudes at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Marseille, highlights the spread and influence of educational institutions established specifically for the nobility from 1550 to the end of the 18th century. He also analyses the effects of the presence of nobles from Central and Eastern Europe from the second half of the 16th century onwards.

Amélie Voisin: “Educate a Duke and Bring Up an Emperor: The Complex and Very Eclectic Education of Francis Stephen of Lorraine”

Amélie Voisin traces the education of Francis Stephen of Lorraine, ninth child and third son of the ducal couple of Lorraine and successor of his father and the future Duke of Lorraine, who was educated at the court of Luneville under the supervision of his parents and later on in Vienna. Was Prince Francis Stephen the result of both types of education or was a slide towards one kind of education noticeable?
